Introduction

We are going to begin reading the memoir Night by Elie Wiesel as our anchor text for Unit 1: "Human Rights around the World: Symbols of Alienation". It is important in understanding the atrocities described in the memoir that we establish background knowledge of the events surrounding the Holocaust.

Night is Elie Wiesel's masterpiece, a candid, horrific, and deeply poignant autobiographical account of his survival as a teenager in the Nazi death camps. It will force the reader to reevaluate what they consider evil and dark in their life.

The goal of this WebQuest is for the student to take ownership in what they learn. I could tell you myself what I know, but there is no discovery or sense of accomplishment that comes from this. Take your time through this and let the information sink in, so when you are reading Night, you can truly appreciate Wiesel's goal of "Keeping Memories Alive"
